THIS SEVEN-STOREY 1970S BUILDING IS HOME TO THREE OF NEW ZEALAND’S LEADING FASHION LABELS, AND IS CURRENTLY UNDERGOING A REVAMP BEFORE BEING UNVEILED AS A MULTIFACETED RETAIL AND HOSPITALITY DEVELOPMENT LATER THIS YEAR.

Occupying a block between Quay and Tyler Street, the Seafarers Building is home along its Tyler Street frontage to fashion boutiques including flagship stores for Zambesi, Kate Sylvester and WORLD.

Construction is currently underway on the partial redevelopment of the building and upon completion in December 2013 the building’s second floor will become home to an exciting new hospitality venture with an internationally recognised chef at the helm.

The Seafarers Building’s name is taken from the Mission to Seafarers, a group with longstanding ties to the building; whose Auckland International Seafarers Centre will remain on level one.

The building is being given a minimalist makeover for use as a multifaceted hospitality complex. The development will leave the Seafarers Building’s original structure and ‘raw 1970s nature’ intact, while modernising its interior and cultivating the decks on the building’s north and south sides.

Its north deck, with its enviable views of Auckland Harbour, will become home to a restaurant and bar sheltered by a light, airy and partially glazed roof to reflect the deck’s aqueous outlook.

In contrast, its south deck is being designed to feel like a ‘winter city garden’, with a bar and restaurant with extraordinary views of the precinct and wider city.

The Seafarers Building will eventually be replaced with a beautiful new building.
