America’s favourite feast-filled holiday has crept to New Zealand’s shores, and Orleans is making sure you celebrate in true southern style.
A national holiday in the USA since the days of Abe Lincoln, Thanksgiving celebrations are right at the centre of every American’s holiday favourites. Folklore has it that the first British settlers hosted a feast to give thanks for a year of good health with the Native American tribes that helped them survive in the brutal elements – way back in the 1620s. Today, families gather every year on the last Thursday in November around tables decked with turkey, loads of sides and sweet dessert pies to devour, while remembering the things they’re thankful for.
A dose of gratitude is good for the soul, so we couldn’t be happier that Orleans has brought the Thanksgiving tradition to New Zealand this year. Bring your friends and family together to be treated to a banquet-style feast, to the tunes of live music from Orleans resident musicians. You choose whether you’d like to celebrate at lunchtime or for dinner – and book your group for one of three seatings: 12-2pm, 6-8pm or 8-close. Ticket are just $50 per person and include a mouth-watering three-course menu stacked with sides and an exclusive cocktail – the Buffalo Trace Pecan Whiskey Sour.
Famous for their hearty takes on classic recipes from the American south, Orleans has whipped up a Thanksgiving menu that will have you begging for seconds! Every guest starts their feast with shrimp and crab cakes. Moving on to the main event, you’ll enjoy succulent fried turkey and sides like sweet potato salad with feta and greens, grilled cauliflower and broccoli with pepitas and bacon, and spoon rolls with honey butter. It’ll be hard, but you must save room for dessert: a cranberry and dark chocolate pie, gingerbread and ice cream to be rounded off with the featured cocktail.
