This captivating brasserie and bar boasts a menu by Josh Emett, sweeping sea and city views and an interior celebrating the seafarers building’s colourful past.

Taking its name from the Italian word for ‘a southerly wind’, Ostro is a bold New Zealand interpretation of an international-style brasserie, with an upscale yet unpretentious atmosphere and multiple Michelin-starred chef Josh Emett at the culinary helm.

Ostro sweeps across the entire second floor of the Seafarers Building, a onetime home to transient sailors which is being transformed by the team behind Ebisu, Tyler Street Garage and Fukuko into six dynamic floors of eateries, bars, a screening room and a private members’ club.

The Seafarers development’s flagship eatery and bar is a literal feast for the senses. An all-weather terrace affords diners breathtaking views of Waitemata Harbour from the brasserie side, while glimpses of Britomart and the wider city can be enjoyed from the more casual City Terrace Bar.

All day dining and cocktails

Ostro’s all-day dining menu is seasonal and effortless, with Josh’s elegant, produce-driven culinary style on show. Small plates and fantastic bar food sate laid-back diners, while seafood platters and a raw bar serving fresh fish catches can be relished in an aptly seaside setting.

As well that unparalleled dining menu, Ostro’s enticing list of exotic libations numbers house-made rum, wine, non-alcoholic house-made sodas and an ever-evolving list of covetable cocktails whipped up by some of New Zealand’s most inventive mixologists.

The brasserie and bar’s simply chic fitout – designed by award-winning architects Fearon Hay – pays homage to the 1970s building’s industrial nature. Translucent glass block walls mirror Ostro’s beautifully aqueous outlook, with concertina glass walls opening up the expansive space.

The Ostro team is a who’s who of the New Zealand dining scene, with hospitality veterans Brendan Turner (EbisuTyler Street Garage), Cam Timmins (Mea Culpa, Fukuko), Paul Franich (42 Below New York, Matterhorn) and Vee Vasan (Hospital Club London) steering the brasserie and bar to greatness.

Xmas High Tea at Ostro

Mixing things up for the celebratory season, Ostro’s Josh Emett and his talented pastry kitchen have created a delectable festive-inspired Xmas High Tea with champagne and stunning harbour views to match.

Out on the Terrace

With great food, live music and a superb new cocktail list, Ostro City Terrace is a triple threat. Well, actually, if you take into account the spectacular views, huge balcony and jugs of sangria as well, it’s probably more of a hexa than a triple.

The Critic

Ostro is giving you and a guest the chance to win high tea on the house. For a glimpse into what the lucky couple will enjoy, we sent along one of our toughest critics to get us a review, eight-year-old food blogger Zoe.

Ostro Date Night

Make some time for that special someone in your life – and make it good – with a date night at Ostro. Featuring a three-course meal and a movie, the romantic Sunday sessions are sure to land you in the good books.

A Most Interesting Person

The Seafarers Members’ Club is opening its doors to a limited number of new members. To get an idea of what the rooftop haunt is all about, we caught up with one of its members; author, advertising analyst, mentor, dad and Taylor Swift enthusiast, James Hurman.

One Night Only

You may not know what you’re doing tonight, tomorrow or this weekend, but one thing you can be sure of is that next Saturday 11 July, you need to be at Ostro City Terrace.

The Event Calendar

Stuck for ideas on what to do this evening? This week? Or this month? Fret no more, Britomart’s new event calendar is here to help.

Square Melons and Brown M&Ms

If he got to pick, Barnaby Weir’s last meal would be a slab of potato gratin, the crispy top off a lasagne and some square melons. Before his show at Ostro on Sunday 12 July, we talk food with the former Black Seeds and Fly My Pretties front man.

And the Finalists are in…

The top 50 finalists for the Metro Peugeot Restaurant of the Year have been announced, and Britomart is once again making moves for the winner’s circle.
