The Village Project Britomart 'Good Drinks' Information Evening
Members of the Britomart and wider community are invited to The Nathan Club for ‘Good Drinks’, an informal evening to introduce The Village Project Britomart.
The Village Project Britomart is a new community initiative designed to provide practical support for humanitarian projects in Uganda.
Following a successful rain-harvesting pilot project in 2011, volunteers from Waiheke, Titirangi and Britomart Village Project teams will this year return to Uganda to roll out the second phase of their rain-harvesting project.
The initiative is part of The Village Project’s ongoing work with Ugandan child care ministry Watoto, which helps rebuild the lives of orphaned children and vulnerable women devastated by war and HIV.
The Village Project was founded in 2008 by Waiheke resident Emily McDonald and has so far completed three successful projects in Uganda. These have included building a Watoto children’s home, constructing two classrooms and pioneering the new rainwater collection model.
Rainwater - harvesting trip 2012
Drawing on rainwater collection expertise from Waiheke Island, the 2012 project will oversee the training of local Ugandans in the construction of new rainwater collection systems. The model can then be implemented across the country, leaving villagers less reliant on wells and less vulnerable to drought, famine and disease.
The Britomart Village Project team was founded by members of Britomart businesses including Material Creative, Westpac New Zealand and Cooper and Company. The team’s focus is lending time and practical support to the planning and implementation of future humanitarian projects.
If you’re interested in learning more about The Village Project Britomart and how you can help, come along for a glass of wine at 5.30pm on Thursday 5 July. You’ll hear inspiring stories from Village Project volunteers Emily McDonald and Toni Brandso and have the chance to mingle with your Britomart neighbours.
You’ll also get a special viewing of the World Press Photo Exhibition 2012, the collection of award-winning photojournalism currently on display at The Nathan Gallery.
You’ll be asked for a $10 donation at the door, to go towards the 2012 Village Project trip to Uganda. Everyone is welcome to attend.
