For a slim window of a couple of months each year, this Foveaux Strait delicacy is in hot demand. Here’s where to get the freshest Bluffies (and how to have them) at Britomart.
For the opening week of the season (Tuesday 5 March until Sunday 10 March), Ostro, The Deck at Ostro and the Seven rooftop bar at Seafarers are offering a weekday lunchtime special of a dozen Bluff oysters for $29.95 between 12pm and 3pm. If you’re on The Deck at Ostro, you can add a bottle of Veuve Cliquot to your (probably increasingly) long lunch and you’ll pay only $130 for the bottle plus a dozen oysters*.
For dinner, Seven has oysters for a standard price of $6 per oyster, as do Ostro and The Deck at Ostro. During Happy Hour on The Deck, however, you can add Bluffies to any drink purchase for a mere $3 each (valid for up to 3 oysters per drink).
Down the lane at Ebisu, head chef Fred Wong has been busy whipping up signature condiments to go with the world’s most delicious shellfish. He’s invented a trio of tastes – yuzu mignonette, white ponzu jelly and cucumber yuzu sorbet – to pair with either a half-dozen oysters ($36) or a dozen ($72).
