Britomart highlights this week – Thursday 16 May to Thursday 23 May

An Allbirds giveaway to celebrate their coming Britomart store! Plus: Fried Chicken Festival, a rainwear round-up and World Meditation Day.

It’s official! The Allbirds flagship store for New Zealand will be opening at Britomart this winter. Launched in California in 2016 by former NZ footballer Tim Brown and biotech and sustainable materials expert Joey Zwillinger, the footwear brand has caught the imaginations of people around the world and has become an international success story. Pairing superfine New Zealand merino wool or eucalyptus fibre uppers with innovative plant-based foam soles, the innovative shoes are a featherweight dream to wear. We’re thrilled to be welcoming them to Britomart in August. Click here to find out more about the first Allbirds New Zealand store.

WIN! We’re such big fans of the featherlight comfort and sustainable materiality of Allbirds shoes that we want you to have your own pair – and another pair to give away to a lucky friend or child. To win two pairs of Allbirds of your choice, go to our Instagram @britomartnz, make sure you’re following us, find the Allbirds post and tag the pal (or parent of a small person) who deserves to have their own pair too.

Speaking of birds that we can’t get enough of, the Fried Chicken Festival is on this weekend just across Quay St at Shed 10. This extravaganza of deep-fried deliciousness is hosted by our friends at the Auckland Food Truck Collective, and Mexico will be on site too, dishing up their famous spicy fried chicken. We have two double passes for Sunday night to give away. Head to our Instagram and Facebook to be in to win.

After being caught in showers both yesterday and today, we realised that the amazing summer we’ve just had has lulled us into forgetting that Auckland is a city where you need to pack rain protection at all times. In a slightly damp state, we did a quick run-around of the precinct to find the most stylish rain protection in-store right now. Click here for our round-up of wet-weather gear.

If you’re currently studying and need to upgrade your wardrobe with some winter-appropriate pieces that will see you into your first job, Ted Baker has a 20 percent off student discount offer until Monday 27 May. The discount is available in-store only, so get to the Atrium on Takutai store with your valid student ID.

When puddle weather arrives, it’s time to trade in the loafers for something that offers a little more ankle coverage. The elegant, Chelsea boot-style limited edition Kathryn Wilson Lucia Boot ($399) is made in Italy from splash-resistant calf leather in white, ochre brown and black. Available in store at Britomart now.

The benefits of meditation are myriad, but here’s the short list – less stress, more patience, more creativity, more focus, lower blood pressure and reduced anxiety. Given that it’s also free and simple, all you need to start getting the benefits is a place to sit still for 10 minutes or so. For World Meditation Day next Tuesday 21 May, our regular meditation guides Nick and Danica have teamed up with Les Mills for a mega-meditation and Body Balance class in Takutai Square (or in the Atrium if the weather doesn’t play ball) from 12-12.50pm, then an evening drop-in meditation and music session by candlelight from 4.30-6.30pm. Get ohmmmm to it!

Volunteers and collectors for Westpac Chopper Appeal Month will be back in Takutai Square next Thursday 23 May, and they’re bringing some entertaining friends with them. There’ll be live music and helicopter toys for sale to raise funds. Each of the more than 7000 Westpac Rescue Helicopter missions each year costs on average $5000 to fund, so please give generously to support this important 24/365 rescue service.

Imagine if you could drive right into the heart of Britomart, step out of your car, hand the keys to someone to park your car for you, and walk away for three hours of shopping or dining for just $20 parking. Amazingly, you can! Our Britomart Central Valet Parking is conveniently located on Gore St opposite Takutai Square and next to the Pavilions. You can even book to have your car groomed so it’s gleaming on your return.
