As a group class trainer for Les Mills Britomart club, Jacob gets his gym time as a bonus part of his job.
Are you from Auckland? I’m from Ohope, a beach town by Whakatane. But I moved up here about 10 years ago now.
How do you get to Britomart? So, I live on the Shore. Sometimes I drive if I have to be in early, or I’ll catch the ferry over.
What do you do here? I’m the marketing coordinator for the Les Mills Britomart club and I also teach group fitness here and in the Les Mills Takapuna, Newmarket and Auckland City.
What do you enjoy about working here? It’s a fun place to work with a chilled out atmosphere.
Where’s your favourite place to dine around here? It’s got to be Amano. Their meatball sandwich… I’ve even been called out that that’s all I eat there.
What’s your favourite hidden Auckland City gem? The Wintergardens, I think. They’re not as well known as they should be.
What’s your idea of fun? Hiking, travelling, exploring, water rafting. I actually went blackwater rafting at the Waitomo caves. You float down the river, and they have waterfalls that you go through.
Sounds like a death trap… It kind of is. They told us if we went the wrong way, we might fall down about 200 metres.
Do you have any hidden talents? I’ve always been really into swimming. I dropped off in the last year, but I’ve done a lot of long distance swimming. So The Auckland Harbour crossing. From Mission Bay to Rangitoto and the first one was when I was 11 years old, I did the Bayswater to Auckland Harbour.
What’s your favourite thing to spend money on? Coffee.
What’s your favourite class that you take? It’s got to be Sprint. It’s a 30 minute high-intensity interval training class on a bike.
Is that because you like punishing people? Yeah, pretty much! It’s a fun class because all the members that come are training as hard as they can, to 85% of your max heart rate, which is high.
