Pretty much everything about her job as store manager at Trelise Cooper pleases Mikie, and we can’t help but find that enthusiasm contagious.
Are you from Auckland? I am. I’ve always been central Auckland, at the moment I’m in Mission Bay.
How do you get to Britomart? Bus. I think it’s probably the most beautiful commute in Auckland. Right along the waterfront. Easy as.
What do you do here? I have been managing the store for two and a bit years now. It’s such a dream come true.
I love it. I love clothes and fashion. Love meeting new and inspiring women which is absolutely the kind of women you get walking through our door. Business women, to creatives, to mothers. Being able to dress them, and hearing their stories.
Do you get to choose who works here? Ooh… To some degree. Absolutely. I can find people. At the end of the day, Trelise has got to sign it off though. Haha. We’ve got the most incredible team.
How did you get into it? I was actually headhunted by a few of the girls at the Parnell store. Which was really, insanely flattering. I used to work in a little shoe store in Newmarket and I used to look after them quite a bit. The role came up and they asked me for an interview and I didn’t think in a million years I’d get it, but something clicked.
Being headhunted is pretty cool. It was! I was so pleased.
What’s the best thing about working in Britomart? I love the people. I think that’s what really drives me. We get all sorts and the community here is epic. We have the most beautiful eateries in Auckland at our fingertips. The best shops in New Zealand. The staff are cool. And there’s always cool stuff going on.
Where is the best place to eat around here? I would day Amano and their bakery. I have to bring a sourdough loaf for family Sunday dinner otherwise I get in huge trouble. So that’s a must-do. They’re also amazing for a Negroni. And I love Cassia for a treat. If I could go there once a week, I would. And I love the Saturday markets. That’s pretty much my Saturday treat, brunch and coffee from there and then I’ll buy some fresh produce. &Sushi also does a fantastic brew. I couldn’t start my morning without them. Supreme coffee is the best.
What’s your idea of fun? Good music and a gin and tonic!
Ooh. Who makes the best gin and tonic around here? I do love Caretaker. Sometimes they get a bit jazzy with it. And I love Ostro for an espresso martini.
Do you have any hobbies? I collect vinyl records.
Where do you go for that? There’s a few places. Real Groovy, Southbound and Holiday Records.
What type of music do you like? It would mainly be hip-hop, soul, a bit of rock, and a lot of lo-fi beats.
If you could do any job in the world what would it be? Does it have to be possible?
No. Great! I’d be a rockstar! I reckon that would be the funnest job in the entire world. It would be stressful, but it would be insane. I pick that.
