Bringing the good work of small food operators to the heart of Britomart

Last week we hosted seven small food businesses in the Atrium on Takutai, where they sold their fantastic food to hundreds of passersby. The event was called Community Eats, because we wanted to recognise the great work that many of these businesses do in their communities – many of them in south and west Auckland. The Village Cafe, for example, is based in a cute caravan in Māngere East, where they’re bringing healthy, nutritious food – and excellent coffee – to an area where unhealthy fast food predominates, and reinvesting their proceeds in the community too. Community Cafe at the Māngere Arts Centre follows a similar model, where they not only offer work mentoring, but funnel their profits into a variety of community initiatives. The other thing they have in common is that they all create fantastic food: Hangi pies, beautiful baking and a whole lot more. In fact, while it was a total pleasure to host them, eating their food offered just as much satisfaction.
