HAIR TODAY Ryder’s new stylist Brooke Perreau has a thing for blondes.
What made you want to work at Ryder? I’ve known a few people who work here, and it always seemed like a really cool place to work, with great people. And I’ve seen the work coming out of the salon, and it’s very cool and current.
How do you get to work? I catch the bus from the North Shore. I actually love it. It’s relaxing, and a hell of a lot faster than driving.
What got you started in hairdressing? I’ve always been interested in hair and makeup, and I went into hairdressing intending to move into makeup. But I loved hairdressing so much that I decided to keep doing it. I like doing naturalistic blondes, using babylights and balayage.
And what do you do when you’re not on the salon floor? I’m really boring. I’m a homebody. I have a little dog, a chihuahua, and I just like puttering around at home with her.
Binge-watched anything good lately? The Fall. I’m actually re-watching it. Gillian Anderson’s character (Detective Stella Gibson) is amazing. She always looks incredible but she’s so messed up.

RUSSIAN REVOLUTION High fashion and low culture meet in Gosha Rubchinskiy’s label
Yekaterinburg doesn’t rank as a fashion capital with Paris, Milan and NYC, but Gosha Rubchinskiy might get it on the map. His streetwear label, hailed as “the face of a new generation of Russian youth”, pairs his own photography with political messages, drawing influence from lowbrow cultures like rave and football, and is produced by Comme des Garcons. Get it now for $149 at Fabric.

POP CULTURE We’re blown away by Kate Sylvester’s latest collection
Inspired by the 1956 French film, Le Ballon Rouge, Kate Sylvester‘s Red Balloon collection is an uplifting shot of colour ahead of spring. Graphic prints, oversized bows, playful polka dots and fabrics as billowy as a parachute have us walking on air. After a winter where black and grey seemed unusually prolific on the streets (even for Auckland!), we think the collection’s bright red and fuschia suiting is just the spring tonic we need. Shown above are the April shirt ($349), Josefina trouser ($449) and Balloon heels ($499).
