AG and Aleana Fernando, known as Locavore Eats on their popular social media feeds, are siblings who love central Auckland – and its food. Here, the duo give us a rundown on their picks of the best restaurants, bars and cafes in Britomart.
Downtown Auckland has some of the city's best restaurants and cafes. What's your favourite cafe for brunch in Britomart?
AG Definitely Daily Bread. Their pastries and breads are amazing and the Britomart branch does a delicious sit-down menu, with eggs benedict, halloumi, excellent coffee and even cocktails. We love the interior of this place, and they even have street-side seating!
Sounds like a great place to start the day. Which spot would you recommend for a tasty bite with great atmosphere in the evening?
ALEANA If you want to try a restaurant that specialises in sustainably caught New Zealand seafood then we recommend trying kingi. The restaurant is so beautifully decked out in glass ornaments that it makes you feel like you're eating under a coral reef. Highlights for us were the Blue Cod Wings (below), Swordfish in Lobster Bisque, and a moreish Kina Toast. The food is so good that we were about to break out into a horrendous rendition of Under the Sea!
The night's not complete without a little something sweet. What would be your pick of the sweet treats at Britomart?
AG When our family eats out near Britomart, we usually skip dessert at the restaurant because we know we can go to Miann for some of the best desserts in the city. Their gateaux are works of art and their gelato is primo!
Are there any places you'd recommend taking your friends on a night out?
ALEANA Caretaker is a cool hidden gem in downtown Auckland. This moody New-York inspired bar can be hard to find but it's really world-class. Instead of a cocktail menu, the expert bartenders ask you a series of questions to decipher your ideal drink. You may think there's room for error but they manage to get it right every single time. Don't forget that every Sunday to Tuesday night they've got jazz music on at 9pm. And they're open until 3am every morning.
